Character Design - So Graphic

This session explored the principles of a successful character bible. In the industry, it's conventional for illustrators to receive a character bible to communicate style and general information. This document can also be presented to potential clients because of its clarity.

Character bibles condense the details of a character into an organised document, from silhouettes to storyboards. Pages should work thematically; graphic design needs to relate to the narrative e.g. Cowboy Westerns. Backgrounds shouldn't be too jarring however, as this distracts from page contents. Fonts should also be thematic and professional.

Above - Logo designs that practice shape placement, composition and simplicity. These designs were inspired by the key word 'disco'. I chose the most popular symbol for disco (a disco ball) as my logo focus.

Above - a character design for Troll Hunters Tales of Arcadia. I tried to create interest on large surface areas, such as his back, using moss and rocks to emphasise personality and theme. I referenced anatomy from existing characters to create continuity.

Above - an interactive toy concept using the same troll character. The figurine is placed on the base, which lights up the runes on the rocks.

Above - a handheld toy concept. The staff is held by the base, a button is pressed to spin the dreamcatcher on the top end.
