Toolkit 1 - Animation Submission Post

Submission Statement

This project required endless patience and perseverance, especially in its initial stages; all elements of this experience were new to me. From learning Adobe Animate to creating fluent movement, and I had to first understand the twelve principles of animation before growing as a 2D animator. These principles, such as squash & stretch, anticipation, and secondary action were introduced to me through weekly animation workshops where I would aim to leave with an outcome representing one of these principles. Through the weeks, I became more accepting of these principles, and I have noticed a transition from 'stiff' to 'fluent' in my own work. This can be seen when comparing my first 'walk' experiment with my 'throw' experiments; I have clearly paid more attention to the idea of anticipation in the 'throwing' exercises and this has greatly benefitted this outcome and its continuity. In this area of Toolkit, I have gained respect for the rules of the animation artform because the weekly workshops unveiled how vital its principles are to effective animation, and how professional industries also apply the same rules. The frustration I had towards Adobe Animate gradually wore off as I noticed weekly improvements in my outcomes and I was shocked at how much development I had made in the timespan of these workshops. I am especially proud of my 'running' animation as it's clear and tight, each frame collaborates with the next to form a readable and recognisable movement. I believe that my life drawing workshops helped to elevate my animation developments; I was gaining a better understanding of the human body and its mechanics. I feel I've barely scratched the surface of Adobe Animate's capabilities, and therefore anticipate further workshops and further skill development. I would love to see an aesthetic and style begin to form in my outcomes as I progress further with 2D animation.
