Toolkit 1 - Autodesk Maya & Supporting Software Submission Post
Submission Statement
This project has felt like a continuous incline in my software skills because of the exposure I received on vital new programmes, such as Autodesk Maya and Premiere. A constant flood of new information and interfaces was overwhelming initially, but I soon learnt that putting in the work to understand a piece of software was valuable in my development as a rounded animator. This is most evident with Maya; I tried to understand the principles behind controls rather than memorizing their location in the programme, therefore 'putting in the work' and forming an awareness of the tools I was utilizing. Maya was also a fundamental aid with my grasp on the 'twelve principles of animation' (squash & stretch, timing, anticipation, staging, follow through & overlapping action, straight ahead & pose-to-pose action, slow in and out, arcs, exaggeration, secondary action, appeal, and solid drawing). By following and documenting the Maya video tutorials accessible to me, these principles became natural and logical rules which I tried to implement into my own practices, such as Previz work. Personally, I found the 'rigging', 'deformers' and 'previsualisation' sections of the video tutorials the most beneficial to my independent Maya work, implementing many of these techniques into my outcomes for 'Script To Screen' and 'Fantastic Voyage':
- 'Rigging and skinning' introduced me to the methodology of turning a model into a movable object. I learnt how to navigate the controls of a rig for my 'Script To Screen' Previz. I then revisited this topic when creating a rig for my original character in 'Fantastic Voyage', and this established a more solid awareness of the rigging procedure.
- 'Deformers' assisted the final outcome and previz for my 'Fantastic Voyage' project by generating emphasised and organic movement, essential for eliminating the rigidity of a novice Maya user. I frequently utilized the 'wave' nonlinear deformer.
- 'previsualisation' nurtured my perception of camera movement, developing an eye for moving compositions.
Outside of Maya work, I was also introduced to the Adobe suite and its programmes. This project focused on Premier Pro, an editing software that helped to compose my work e.g turning Maya play blasts into a readable video, typically assisted by music and graphic effects. My appreciation for Premier's versatility emerged during my 'Script To Screen' project, as it cemented my Previz together. I found the interface of Premier friendlier than Maya, which made the learning process thoroughly enjoyable. Chrissie's premier workshops guided me through the programme, its abilities and also its limitations. After gaining a foundation-level awareness of Premier, I transitioned onto After Effects. Essentially, a more complex editing software that can achieve more specific and dynamic results compared to Premier. I had previous knowledge of After Effects, which might have influenced my enjoyment of the Adobe software workshops. I took advantage of these Adobe tutorials for other project outcomes, and I believe my 'Script To Screen' and 'Fantastic Voyage' outcomes are more professional, coherent, and effective with the help of these editing suites. Both Premier and After Effects helped to solidify my experience using the 'twelve principles of animation', because the process of editing concentrates on the fluency and believability of an edit. I also became more informed about Photoshop during this project, utilizing this programme into all areas of corelating projects. I have learnt how versatile the software can be, and its uses outside of its drawing tools.
- Photoshop furthered my Maya renders by polishig out lighting flaws, incorperating matte paintings, and visualizing aternative colour palettes.
- The programme also helped assist wireframes, textured and untextured variations of Maya models which benefitted the clarity of my projects their processes.
- Learning about Photoshop's interface helped make the creation of textures and bump maps more effective, as I would have the ability to amend and improve through tools highlighted in tutorials.
- Using Photoshop's significant catalogue of brushes and drawing tools to inform storyboards for Script To Screen and Fantastic Voyage.
Overall, this area of 'Toolkit 1' has been a tough and an immense learning curve. However, reflecting back on all the advances I have made with many different programmes, it's hard to not also feel accomplished and motivated to develop on my current skillset further.
