Toolkit 1 - Drawing Submission Post
Reflective Statement
Life drawing sessions have allowed me to practice traditional creative methods vigorously, as I would participate on a weekly basis. Before these sessions began, I had no experience with drawing live models and this is evident in the stiff, vague outcomes displayed at the beginning of my submission portfolio. At this novice stage, I learnt to relax through tasks such as 'creating a drawing without removing your pencil from the page' and 'focus on the negative space around a subject'. Alternating through different tasks, along with the repetition of time limits helped me discover a workflow for capturing the human figure and 1 found myself collecting techniques that benefitted my outcomes. For instance, I gravitated towards the basic shapes of a subject, and only explored shading once I had proportioned a full body. As the life drawing sessions progressed, I was challenged to be bolder and more expressive. This involved experimenting with charcoal, coloured pencils, biro, and even highlighters which benefitted the atmosphere of my work. I implemented boldness through my linework as well as my mediums; avoiding hesitant feathered linework and exploring heavy, suggestive strokes. I found that I was more considerate of my mark making when I depended on limited lines, benefitting my knowledge on the natural curves of the human body since I had to know what I wanted before it was on the page. A frequent challenge within sessions was having a 2 minute time limit for a pose, and I am now able to naturally finish a drawing in this timespan rather than create a half-finished sketch. On completion of these sessions, I see the human figure as a familiar and digestible subject. This contrasts with the beginning of this project, when I felt overwhelmed with capturing the body. I'm now able to reflect on the importance of 'being familiar with the figure' as it's essential to character creation and animation. I'm confident that the mental library of human poses I have generated with greatly benefit the dynamics of my animations in the future as I have a broader understanding of the bodies capabilities.
