Pre Visualisation 101 - Camerawork #3

Camera Shake

These camera techniques will be useful for my own pre-visualisation, as I'm aiming for a 'hand held' style'. By importing a camera pre-set and adjusting its attributes, I was able to shake the camera in different styles, depending on the situation within the scene.

In the first example, a car drives past the camera dramatically. In order to create a more organic shot, camera shake is included. Jitter, Wander, Destabilise and Shake are the four options available with the imported camera, some of which are great for a 'documentary' style. These attributes are increased as the car moves past the screen, to suggest the velocity and speed of the car. A subtle shake can help sell a shot.

In this second example, the same car drops into shot from above. Camera shake is used to imply weight. Without any shake, the scene feels very artificial, the additional jitter helps make the movement more compelling. Dramatic camera movement can also help emphasise immersion.

Contra-Zoom

This style of zoom was made famous by Alfred Hitchcock in the film Vertigo. The technique plays with an audiences perspective, creating an unusual and disorienting effect. The set in the final image isn't altered, despite the 'stretch' effect of the clip, The camera's movement is all that changes to create this technique.
