Story Crashcourse
The aim of this workshop was to develop my story building methods. I began by churning out my current story concept as a stream of consciousness on a sheet of paper, limited to 200 words and 5 minutes. I was surprisingly happy with the result, which successfully incorporates all three of my 'blue box' tropes.
Until now, I hadn't had the opportunity to write-out my concept as a story, rather bullet-point its most significant checkpoints. I was surprised at how easy it was to link my ideas together. I then developed upon this story by listing key features of a typical 3 act story, such as character archetypes and story progressions.
I ended the workshop by re-writing the same concept, but by adding the restriction of the 3 act structure, along with attempting to incorporate irony. I was shocked to find this task far more challenging. My writing outcome turned out more like a synopsis, bullet pointing the story rather than describing it. I also found it hard to finish the body of text at a good point. However, despite the unusual outcomes of this workshop, I have realised which one of my ideas I hope to take forward and develop. I need to ensure I use some sort of conventional structure as the core of my story concept, rather than trying to adapt a story around a structure.
