Fantastic Voyage - Matte Painting #3
A significant portion of my animation will take place inside a tree trunk and this matte painting aims to signify this location transition. The polygon pattern is inspired by the graphic novel 'A Graphic Cosmogony', I used a tree bark texture to solidify its themes. This composition is minimal and I'm sceptical about its effectiveness. I hope to adapt once applying this painting to me 3D pre-vis. In the video process, I decide to reduce the size of the polygon pattern; camera movement will be important to the relating animation scenes and I therefore need space to scrub around the image without loosing quality.
As my animation develops, the camera will zoom back out of the 'tree' and this will require a hole in my matte painting. I will either apply the matte painting to a 'plane' and cut a whole through the image, or I will edit the painting itself by drawing the whole. By shrinking the polygon pattern of the painting, I have given myself these two options to work with.

A page from 'A Graphic Cosmogony', which hugely influenced this Matte Painting. |
