Organic Modelling

Modelling the body & eye socket

Turning off ‘local mode’ in lattice options creates a more organic lattice point movement.

In this case, the local mode lattice is used to create the form of the character in the orthograph, an organic and smooth shape.

Blinn ramps can help create the effect of an eyeball with a pupil. Three markers on the ramp/gradient distinguish the white of the eye, the colour and the centre pupil.

By inserting edge loops and adjusting the position of vertexes, the eye lids are formed around the eyeball.

Mirroring the half-model and smoothing the geometry (3 on the keyboard) allows me to see how the character’s body is coming along. Here is my character with his finalised eye socket. The eyeball is a draft that will be developed upon later.

Modelling the mouth

The faces surrounding the orthograph’s mouth are removed, and the vertexes can be adjusted to create the basic lip positioning.

Edge loops are added around the mouth gap. Sculpting can then become more precise and the lips more defined.

The character’s mouth is given some volume by extruding back, forming a throat. The model can be halved in order to work on the interior mouth and exterior character.

The throat is then sealed, additional geometry is added using the multi-cut tool.
